Great Collections of the World. Peggy Guggenheim: A Collection in Venice
9 October 2010 – 31 January 2011, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth
The inaugural exhibition in the Art Gallery of WA’s Great Collections of the World series brings world-class art which is normally only on display in Venice, Italy to the Perth Cultural Centre in Northbridge. Peggy Guggenheim was an amazing woman of her time and is regarded as a pioneer who introduced various art genres to the public. The Art Gallery of Western Australia worked with the curator in Venice and chose 30 pieces to come to Perth – this is an exclusive exhibition to Perth and will not be shown elsewhere in Australia within a 12 month period. It features works by artists who defined 20th Century modern art such as Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Piet Mondrian and Jackson Pollock.

Spring in the Valley, 1-31 October, Swan Valley
Spring in the Valley features the finest food, wine and beer of WA’s oldest wine growing region, the Swan Valley. The 2010 program will include art exhibitions, concerts, special tastings, cooking classes and family friendly events. Activities include Chocolate Feasts at the Margaret River Chocolate Factory, Brewery tours at Elmars in the Valley, The Alpaca Story at Alpaca Plus, distillery tours at Great Northern Distillery and an art exhibition at Chesters of Heafod Glen and Duckstein Ocktoberfest.

Ironman Western Australia Triathlon, 5 December, Busselton
Over 1,300 of the world’s best ironmen and women will tackle the gruelling yet fast course consisting of a 3.8km swim around the famous Busselton Jetty, 180km bike ride through Busselton Township and the Tuart Forest, and a 42.2km marathon along the picturesque Geographe Bay.

Whale Watching along WA’s humpback highway, now till early December
Capture a glimpse of Humpback whales, considered the most acrobatic of the whale species, as they make their way home to the Antarctica along the coastline of WA. With one of the longest whale-watching seasons in the world, the coastal towns of WA provide vantage spots for spectacular shows of breaching, spy hopping and tail slapping by hundreds of whales from June to early December. In the South West region, excellent whale viewing spots include Augusta, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse which is Australia’s tallest lighthouse and Albany, a former whaling station. Whale watching tours operate out of Perth and Geographe Bay from September to mid December.
